General Topology, chapter II, § 3. Complete spaces

Let XX be a set, let (Yi)i∈I(Y_i)_{i \in I} be a family of uniform spaces, and for each i∈Ii \in I let fif_i be a mapping of XX into YiY_i. Let XX carry the coarsest uniformity UU for which the fif_i are uniformly continuous. Then in order that a filter base B\mathfrak{B} on XX should be a Cauchy filter base it is necessary and sufficient that fi(B)f_i(\mathfrak{B}) should be a Cauchy filter base on YiY_i, for each i∈Ii \in I.

The condition is necessary by Proposition 3. Conversely, suppose that it is satisfied, and let U(Vi1,…,Vin)U(V_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n}) be an entourage of the uniformity U\mathfrak{U} [§ 2, no. 3, formula (1)]. By hypothesis, for each index kk there is a set Mk∈BM_k \in \mathfrak{B} such that fik(Mk)f_{i_k}(M_k) is VikV_{i_k}-small (1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n). Let MM be a set of B\mathfrak{B} contained in MkM_k for 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n; then for each pair of points x,x′x, x' of MM we have [fik(x),fik(x′)]∈Vik[f_{i_k}(x), f_{i_k}(x')] \in V_{i_k} for 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n, so that

(x,x′)∈U(Vi1,…,Vin). (x, x') \in U(V_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n}).
This completes the proof.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
