General Topology, chapter II, § 4. Relations between uniform spaces and compact spaces
In a compact space , the component of , the set , and the intersection of the neighbourhoods of which are both open and closed, are all three identical.
It is enough to show that is connected: for in any uniform space the component of is contained in the intersection of the neighbourhoods of which are both open and closed, and this intersection is contained in by Proposition 5.
Suppose is not connected. Since is closed, there are two non-empty disjoint closed sets and such that . By Proposition 4 of § 3 there is an entourage of such that is empty.
Let be an open entourage such that , and let be the closed set which is the complement of in . Suppose for example that , and let be a point of . Then for each symmetric entourage one sees immediately, by induction on , that every -chain joining and in must have a point in , by the choice of . Since by hypothesis and can be joined by a -chain for each symmetric entourage , we see that is not empty if . On the other hand, if then clearly ; thus it follows that, as runs through the set of symmetric entourages of , the sets form a filter base of closed sets in the compact space . Hence all these sets have a common point and therefore meets ; but this contradicts the definition of .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
