General Topology, chapter IV, § 3. The field of real numbers
The multiplicative group of real numbers is a topological group isomorphic to the product of its subgroups and , where
For each let denote (sign of ). The function is a homomorphism of onto . We have , and this decomposition of as the product of an element of and an element of is unique; hence the group structure of is the product of the group structures of and . On the other hand, the mapping is continuous, and so is , since . Hence the result. We extend the function to the whole of by putting .
We shall see in Chapter V (§ 4, no. 1, Theorem 1) that the topological group is isomorphic to the additive group ; this will complete the determination of the structure of the topological group .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
