General Topology, chapter IX, § 1. Generation of a uniformity by a family of pseudometrics; uniformizable spaces

Given a uniformity U\mathscr{U} on a set XX, there is a family of pseudometrics on XX such that the uniformity defined by this family is identical with U\mathscr{U}.

For each entourage VV of the uniformity U\mathscr{U}, define inductively a sequence of symmetric entourages (Un)(U_n) such that U1⊂VU_1 \subset V and Un+1⊂UnU_{n+1} \subset U_n for all n≥1n \geq 1. The sequence (Un)(U_n) is a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity UV\mathscr{U}_V coarser than U\mathscr{U}; moreover, it is clear that U\mathscr{U} is the least upper bound of all the uniformities UVU_V as VV runs through the filter of entourages of U\mathscr{U}. Theorem 1 is therefore a consequence of the following proposition:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
