General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

The left (resp. right) uniformity of a metrizable group GG can be defined by a left-invariant (resp. right-invariant) metric on GG.

Suppose that the fundamental system (Vn)(V_n) of neighbourhoods of ee consists of symmetric neighbourhoods such that Vn+13⊂VnV_{n+1}^3 \subset V_n for each nn. Then the corresponding entourages UnU_n of the left uniformity are symmetric entourages such that Un+1⊂UnU_{n+1} \subset U_n. The method used in the proof of Proposition 2 of § 1, no. 4 allows us to construct, from the sequence of entourages (Un)(U_n), a metric dd on GG compatible with the left uniformity of GG; and since for each z∈Gz \in G the mapping (x,y)→(zx,zy)(x, y) \to (zx, zy) leaves each of the UnU_n invariant, the definition of dd shows that it is a left-invariant metric. This method also holds for the right uniformity.

Note that, if the two uniformities of GG are distinct, the metric dd is not right-invariant, and hence in general d(x−1,y−1)≠d(x,y)d(x^{-1}, y^{-1}) \neq d(x, y).

In particular, if GG is a metrizable abelian group, its uniformity is defined by an invariant metric dd: if GG is written additively, we have

d(x,y)=d(0,y−x)=d(0,x−y). d(x, y) = d(0, y - x) = d(0, x - y).

We shall often write ∣x∣|x| (or ∣∣x∣||x|) for d(0,x)d(0, x); we have then

d(x,y)=∣x−y∣. d(x, y) = |x - y|.

The function ∣x∣|x| satisfies the following three conditions:

a) ∣−x∣=∣x∣|-x| = |x| for all x∈Gx \in G.

b) ∣x+y∣≤∣x∣+∣y∣|x + y| \leq |x| + |y| for all x∈Gx \in G and all y∈Gy \in G.

c) ∣x∣=0|x| = 0 if and only if x=0x = 0.

Conversely:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
