General Topology, chapter X, § 4. Approximation of continuous real-valued functions

Let (un)(u_n) be an increasing (resp. decreasing) sequence of continuous real-valued functions on XX. If the upper (resp. lower) envelope ff of the sequence (un)(u_n) is finite and continuous on XX, then the sequence (un)(u_n) converges uniformly to ff in XX.

It is clear that the conclusion of Theorem 1 is no longer necessarily valid if XX is no longer assumed to be compact, as is shown by the example of the decreasing sequence of functions x/(n+x)x/(n + x) in R+\mathbf{R}_+.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
