Bourbaki

Exercise 32, § 6

Algebra, I, 155

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let pp be a prime number and G a pp-group. Let G∗=GpD(G)G^* = G^p D(G) be the subgroup of G generated by D(G) and the xp,x∈Gx^p, x \in G. (a) Show that G∗G^* is the intersection of the kernels of the homomorphisms of G into Z/pZ\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}. (b) Show that a subset S of G generates G if and only if the image of S in G/G∗G/G^* generates G/G∗G/G^*. Deduce that, if (G:G∗)=pn(G:G^*) = p^n, the integer nn is the minimum number of elements in a subset of G which generates G; in particular, G is cyclic if and only if n⩽1n \leqslant 1. (c) Let uu be an automorphism of G of order prime to pp and let uˉ\bar{u} be the corresponding automorphism of G/G∗G/G^*. Show that uˉ=1\bar{u} = 1 implies u=1u = 1.
