Theory of Sets, III, 225

(a) Let α\alpha and β\beta be two ordinals. Show that the inequality α<β\alpha < \beta is equivalent to α+1⩽β\alpha + 1 \leqslant \beta, and that it implies the inequalities ξ+α<ξ+β\xi + \alpha < \xi + \beta, α+ξ⩽β+ξ\alpha + \xi \leqslant \beta + \xi, αξ⩽βξ\alpha\xi \leqslant \beta\xi for all ordinals ξ\xi, and ξα<ξβ\xi\alpha < \xi\beta if ξ>0\xi > 0.

(b) Deduce from (a) that there exists no set to which every ordinal belongs (use Exercise 14 (d)).

(c) Let α\alpha, β\beta, μ\mu be three ordinals. Show that each of the relations μ+α<μ+β\mu + \alpha < \mu + \beta, α+μ<β+μ\alpha + \mu < \beta + \mu implies α<β\alpha < \beta; and that each of the relations μα<μβ\mu\alpha < \mu\beta, αμ<βμ\alpha\mu < \beta\mu implies α<β\alpha < \beta provided that μ>0\mu > 0.

(d) Show that the relation μ+α=μ+β\mu + \alpha = \mu + \beta implies α=β\alpha = \beta, and that μα=μβ\mu\alpha = \mu\beta implies α=β\alpha = \beta provided that μ>0\mu > 0.

(e) Two ordinals α\alpha and β\beta are such that α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta if and only if there exists an ordinal ξ\xi such that β=α+ξ\beta = \alpha + \xi. This ordinal ξ\xi is then unique and is such that ξ⩽β\xi \leqslant \beta; it is written (−α)+β(-\alpha) + \beta.

(f) Let α\alpha, β\beta, ζ\zeta be three ordinals such that ζ<αβ\zeta < \alpha\beta. Show that there exist two ordinals ξ\xi, η\eta such that ζ=αη+ξ\zeta = \alpha\eta + \xi and ξ<α\xi < \alpha, η<β\eta < \beta (cf. no. 5, Theorem 3, Corollary 3). Moreover, ξ\xi and η\eta are uniquely determined by these conditions.
