Theory of Sets, III, 232

An element aa of a lattice EE is said to be irreducible if the relation sup⁡(x,y)=a\sup(x,y)=a implies either x=ax=a or y=ay=a.

(a) Show that in a finite lattice EE every element aa can be written as sup⁡(e1,…,ek)\sup(e_1,\ldots,e_k), where the eie_i (1≤i≤k1\leq i\leq k) are irreducible.

(b) Let EE be a finite lattice and let JJ be the set of its irreducible elements. For each x∈Ex\in E let S(x)S(x) be the set of all y∈Jy\in J which are ≤x\leq x. Show that the mapping x→S(x)x\to S(x) is an isomorphism of EE onto a subset of P(J)\mathfrak{P}(J), ordered by inclusion, and that S(inf⁡(x,y))=S(x)∩S(y)S(\inf(x,y))=S(x)\cap S(y).
