Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
(a) Let be a distributive lattice (§ 1, Exercise 16). If is irreducible in (Exercise 7), show that the relation implies or .
(b) Let be a finite distributive lattice and let be the set of its irreducible elements, ordered by the induced ordering. Show that the isomorphism of onto a subset of defined in Exercise 7 (b) is such that . Deduce that if is the ordered set obtained by endowing with the opposite ordering, then is isomorphic to the set of increasing mappings of into (§ 1, Exercise 6).
(c) With the hypotheses of (b), let be the set of elements of other then the least element of . For each , let be the distinct minimal elements of the interval in ; for each index let be an element of such that and . Show that no two of the elements are comparable.
(d) Conversely, let , ..., be elements of P, no two of which are comparable. Let and let
Show that for . Let and let
