In this exercise, we use the following result from algebraic topology (Lefschetz’s formula11^{11}):: let X be a finite dimensional compact manifold, and ff a morphism from X to itself. Assume that the set F of points xx of X such that f(x)=xf(x) =x is finite, and that for all x∈Fx\in F the number δ(x)=\delta (x) = det(1 −Tx(f)-T_x(f)) is non-zero. If Hi(f)H^i(f) denotes the endomorphism of the vector space Hi(X,R)H^i(X,\mathbf{R}) induced by ff (for i≥0i\geq 0), then

∑x∈Fδ(x)/∣δ(x)∣=∑i≥0(−1)i\sum_{x\in F}\delta (x)/|\delta (x)|=\sum_{i\geq 0}(-1)^iTr Hi(f)H^i(f).

Let G be a connected compact Lie group, T a maximal torus of G. For g∈Gg\in G, denote by τ(g)\tau (g) the automorphism of the manifold G/TG/T induced by left multiplication by gg.

a) Let tt be an element of T such that the subgroup generated by tt is dense in T. Show that the fixed points of τ(t)\tau (t) are the classes nTnT for n∈NG(T)n\in N_G(T). Deduce that (NG(T):T)=∑i(−1)i(N_G(T) : T) =\sum_i(-1)^i dimRHi(G/T,R)_{\mathbf{R}}H^i(G/T,\mathbf{R}).

b) Let gg be an arbitrary element of G; show that the set of fixed points of τ(g)\tau (g) is non-empty, and deduce another proof of Th. 2.\*
