Let H be a connected closed subgroup of G such that T∩HT\cap H is a maximal torus S of H. Let λ∈R(H,S)\lambda \in R(H,S); denote by R(λ)R(\lambda ) the set of roots of R(G,T)R(G,T) whose restriction to S is equal to λ\lambda.

a) Show that R(λ)R(\lambda ) is not empty.

b) Let w∈WH(S)w\in W_H(S); show that there exists an element w‾\overline{w} of WG(T)W_G(T) such that R(wλ)=w‾R(λ)R(w\lambda ) = \overline{w}R(\lambda ) (use Exerc. 4 of §2). c) Let P(λ)P(\lambda ) be the intersection of R(G,T)R(G,T) with the subgroup of X(T) generated by R(λ)R(\lambda ). Show that there exists a closed subgroup GλG_{\lambda} of G containing T such that P(λ)=R(Gλ,T)P(\lambda ) = R(G_{\lambda},T). Deduce that the reflection sλ∈WH(S)s_{\lambda}\in W_H(S) is the restriction to S of a product of reflections sαs_{\alpha} with α∈P(λ)\alpha \in P(\lambda ).

d) Show that the nodal vector Kλ∈L(S)K_{\lambda}\in L(S) associated to λ\lambda is a linear combination with integer coefficients of the KαK_{\alpha} for α∈R(λ)\alpha \in R(\lambda ).

e) Let BHB_H be a basis of R(H,S)R(H,S). Show that R(λ)R(\lambda ) is contained in the subgroup of X(T) generated by the union of the R(μ)R(\mu) for μ∈BH\mu\in B_H (prove that the set of λ∈R(H,S)\lambda \in R(H,S) having the stated property is stable under sμs_\mu for all μ∈BH\mu\in B_H, and use cc))).
