We retain the notations of Exerc. 16 to 18; assume that the subgroup H is principal. Give (resp. ) a scalar product invariant under (resp. under ). Let be two roots in .
a) Show that, if and are orthogonal, the sets and are orthogonal. Deduce that if G is almost simple then so is H.
b) Assume from now on that . Show that there exists a surjective map such that, for is the unique root of linked (that is, not orthogonal) to ; we have , and the roots
in are pairwise orthogonal (write and as linear combinations of the , then identify the coefficients).
c) If , the map is bijective, and the only pairs of linked roots in are the pairs for .
d) Assume that ; let . Show that contains either one or two elements; if , the root is orthogonal to the other roots in , and has the same length as ; if and is linked to a unique root , of the same length as , and is orthogonal to the remainder of ; if and is orthogonal to the other roots in .
e) Study similarly the case .
