Take G=SO(n,R)G =\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}), with n≥3n\geq 3; put n=2l+1n= 2l+ 1 if nn is odd, and n=n= 2l2l if nn is even. The algebra gC\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbf{C}} can be identified with o(n,C)\mathfrak{o}(n,\mathbf{C}); we use the notations of Chap. VIII, §13, nos. 2 and 4. Denote by (fi)1≤i≤n(f_i)_{1\leq i\leq n} the canonical basis of Rn\mathbf{R}^n. Put ej=12(f2j−1+if2j)e_j = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(f_{2j-1}+if_{2j}) and e−j=12(f2j−1−if2j)e_{-j} = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(f_{2j-1}-if_{2j}) for 1≤j≤l1\leq j\leq l, and e0=i2f2l+1e_0 = i\sqrt{2}f_{2l+1} if nn is odd; choose the Witt basis of Cn\mathbf{C}^n given by e1,...,el,e−l,...,e−1e_1, . . . , e_l, e_{-l}, . . . , e_{-1} if nn is even (resp. e1,...,el,e0,e−l,...,e−1e_1, . . . , e_l, e_0, e_{-l}, . . . , e_{-1} if nn is odd).

a) Let HiH_i be the subspace of Rn\mathbf{R}^n generated by f2i−1f_{2i-1} and f2i(1≤i≤l)f_{2i}(1\leq i\leq l); show that the subgroup of G consisting of the elements gg such that g(Hi)⊂Hig(H_i)\subset H_i and det(g∣Hig|H_i) =1= 1 for 1≤i≤l1\leq i\leq l is a maximal torus T of G, and that L(T)(C)=hL(T)_{(\mathbf{C})}=\mathfrak{h}. b) Identify X(T) with a subgroup of h∗\mathfrak{h}^* by means of δ\delta. Show that the linear forms εi\varepsilon_i belong to X(T); if t∈Tt\in T and if the restriction of tt to HjH_j is a rotation through an angle θj\theta_j, then εj(t)=eiθj\varepsilon_j(t) =e^{i\theta_j}. The weights ϖ1,...,ϖl−2\varpi_1, . . . , \varpi_{l-2}; 2ϖl−1,2ϖl,ϖl−1±ϖl2\varpi_{l-1},2\varpi_l, \varpi_{l-1}\pm \varpi_l belong to X(T). If nn is odd, ϖl−1\varpi_{l-1} belongs to X(T). c) Let G~=\widetilde{G} = Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) and let φ:G~→G\varphi : \widetilde{G}\rightarrow G be the canonical covering. For

θθ=(θ1,...,θl)∈Rl\theta \theta = (\theta_1, . . . , \theta_l)\in \mathbf{R}^l, put t(θθ)=∏i=1lt(\theta \theta ) =\prod_{i=1}^l (cosθi−f2i−1f2i\theta_i-f_{2i-1}f_{2i} sin θi\theta_i)∈G~\in \widetilde{G}. Show that the set of the t(θθ)t(\theta \theta ) for θθ∈Rl\theta \theta \in \mathbf{R}^l is a maximal torus T~\widetilde{T} of G~\widetilde{G}, such that φ(T~)=T\varphi ( \widetilde{T}) = T. If X(T~)X( \widetilde{T}) is identified with a subgroup of h∗\mathfrak{h}^*, we have εj(t(θθ))=e2iθj\varepsilon_j(t(\theta \theta )) =e^{2i\theta_j}.

d) Show that the weights ϖl−1\varpi_{l-1} and ϖl\varpi_l belong to X(T~)X( \widetilde{T}); deduce that Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) is simply-connected (cf. §3, Exerc. 5).
