Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 405

a) Let E be a simply-connected topological space and u:E→Gu: E\rightarrow G a continuous map such that u(E)⊂Gru(E)\subset G_r. Show that uu is homotopic (General Topology, Chap. XI) to the constant map with value ee (consider the covering φr:(G/T)×tr→Gr\varphi_r: (G/T)\times \mathfrak{t}_r\rightarrow G_r; lift uu to u~:E→(G/T)×t\widetilde{u}: E\rightarrow (G/T)\times \mathfrak{t}, then use the fact that t\mathfrak{t} is contractible).

∗b)^*b) Prove that the group π2(G)\pi_2(G) is zero.

(Let u:S2→Gu:\mathbf{S}_2\rightarrow G be a map of class C∞C^{\infty}; by using Prop. 1 and the transversality theorem, show that uu is homotopic to a map with image contained in GrG_r, then apply aa).)\*
