General Topology, I, 140

It is set in small type as supplementary.

Let (θn)(\theta_n) be a sequence of irrational numbers which is dense in the interval I=[0,1]I = [0, 1] of R\mathbf{R}. Let InI_n be the quotient space of II obtained by identifying all the points 0,θ1,…,θn0, \theta_1, \ldots, \theta_n, and let φn\varphi_n be the canonical mapping I→InI \to I_n. Let XX be the set of rational numbers contained in II; then the restriction of φn\varphi_n to XX is a bijection of XX onto φn(X)\varphi_n(X). Let Tn\mathfrak{T}_n be the inverse image under this bijection of the topology induced on φn(X)\varphi_n(X) by the topology of InI_n. Show that the greatest lower bound of the decreasing sequence (Tn)(\mathfrak{T}_n) of Hausdorff topologies on XX is not a Hausdorff topology.*
