Exercise 10, § 4
General Topology, IX
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be an uncountable set and let denote the completely regular space ( carrying the discrete topology). Let (resp. ) be the set of all in such that, for each integer (resp. ) the set of such that has at most one element.
a) Show that and are disjoint closed subsets of .
b) Let be two open subsets of such that and . Let denote the set of all elementary sets in (Chapter I, § 4, no. 1) whose projections which are distinct from consist of a single element; for each , let be the set of all such that consists of a single element. Show that there is a sequence of points of , a sequence of sets of , a sequence of distinct elements of and a strictly increasing sequence of integers with the following properties: (i) is a neighbourhood of ; (ii) is the set of all such that ; (iii) for each , and for each , if and for all other .
c) Let be the point such that for each integer and for all other than the . Let be a set of which contains , and let be an integer such that for all . Show that , and deduce that is not normal.
