Exercise 25, § 4

General Topology, IX

A Hausdorff space XX is said to be metacompact if, given any open covering RR of XX, there is a point-finite open covering of XX which refines RR.

a) Show that every closed subspace of a metacompact space is metacompact, and that if every open subspace of a metacompact space XX is metacompact, then every subspace of XX is metacompact.

b) Let XX be a Hausdorff space and let RR be a closed equivalence relation on XX, all of whose equivalence classes are compact. Show that if X/RX/R is metacompact, then XX is metacompact [argue as in Exercise 21 b)].

c) Show that a topological space which is both metacompact and countably compact (§ 2, Exercise 14) is compact. [Use Zorn’s lemma to show that every point-finite open covering contains a minimal open covering, and use § 2, Exercise 14 a).]

d) The locally compact, completely normal space X=[a,b[X = [a, b[ defined in Chapter I, § 9, Exercise 12 is not metacompact (*).

e) Let YY be a metrizable space and let AA be a subset of YY such that both AA and its complement are dense in YY. Let XX denote the non-regular space obtained by endowing YY with the topology generated by the open sets of YY and the set AA. Show that XX is metacompact. (For each x∈Xx \in X, consider a neighbourhood VxV_x of xx contained in a set of a given open covering R\mathfrak{R} of XX, such that Vx⊂AV_x \subset A if x∈Ax \in A, and such that VxV_x is a neighbourhood of xx in YY if x∉Ax \notin A. Note that the subspace AA of XX is paracompact, and that the union of the VxV_x for x∉Ax \notin A is also paracompact.)
