Bourbaki

Exercise 28, § 4

General Topology, IX

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a metric space, let dd be the metric on XX, let AA be a closed subset of XX and let f:A→[1,2]f : A \to [1, 2] be a continuous real-valued function. Show that the real-valued function gg on XX which is such that g(x)=f(x)g(x) = f(x) if x∈Ax \in A, and

g(x)=1d(x,A)inf⁡y∈A(f(y)d(x,y)) g(x) = \frac{1}{d(x, A)} \inf_{y \in A} (f(y)d(x, y))

if x∈CAx \in C_A, is continuous on XX. Hence give a proof of Theorem 2 for metric spaces.
