Algebra, VIII, p. 169

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let A be a ring, a\mathfrak{a} a two-sided nil ideal of A, and (en)n⩾1(e_n)_{n\geqslant 1} an orthogonal sequence of idempotents in A/aA/\mathfrak{a}. Prove that there exists an orthogonal sequence (en)n⩾1(e_n)_{n\geqslant 1} of idempotents in A such that ene_n is the class of ene_n in A/aA/\mathfrak{a} for every nn. (Let ee and e′e' be two orthogonal idempotents in A/a,e′A/\mathfrak{a},e' an idempotent in A lifting e′e', and let aa be a representative of ee in A. Observe that we can modify aa to have ae′=e′aae'=e'a, and then, as in Proposition 7 of VIII, p. 159, to have a2=a.a^2=a.) b) Let K be a commutative field, L an uncountable set, and A the K-algebra defined in the previous exercise. Prove that there does not exist any orthogonal family (eλ)λ∈L(e_{\lambda})_{\lambda\in L} of idempotents in A satisfying eλ≡cλe_{\lambda}\equiv c_{\lambda} (mod R(A)\mathfrak{R}(A)) for every λ∈L\lambda \in L. (Consider the set H of elements (λ,μ)(\lambda , \mu) of L×LL\times L such that cλ(eμ−cμ)=0c_{\lambda}(e_\mu-c_\mu) = 0. Observe that the sets H∩({λ}×L)H\cap (\{\lambda \} \times L) are finite for every λ∈L\lambda \in L and the sets H∩(L×{μ})H\cap (L\times \{\mu\}) are finite for every μ∈L.\mu\in L.)
