Algebra, VIII, p. 345, § 17. Reduced Norms and Traces

Let uu be the element ∑i∈ITi⊗ei\sum_{i\in I}T_i\otimes e_i of the central simple K(T)K(\mathbf{T})-algebra A(K(T))A_{(K(\mathbf{T}))}. Let P be the reduced characteristic polynomial of uu. Then P belongs to the ring K[T][X]K[\mathbf{T}][X]; viewed as an element of the ring K[T,X]K[\mathbf{T},X], it is homogeneous of degree nn.

We choose an extension L of K and an L-algebra isomorphism θ\theta from A(L)A_{(L)} to Mn(L)\mathbf{M}_n(L). We denote by θ‾:A(L(T))→Mn(L(T))\overline{\theta}: A_{(L(\mathbf{T}))}\rightarrow \mathbf{M}_n(L(\mathbf{T})) the isomorphism of L(T)L(\mathbf{T})-algebras deduced from θ\theta by extension of scalars. By Corollary 1 of VIII, p. 342, we have

(47) P(X)=χθ‾(u)(X)=P(X) =\chi_{\overline{\theta}(u)}(X) = det(XIn−θ‾(u)I_n-\overline{\theta}(u)) == det(XIn−∑i∈ITiθ(1⊗ei))(XI_n-\sum_{i\in I}T_i\theta (1\otimes e_i)).

Since the matrices θ(1⊗ei)\theta (1\otimes e_i) belong to Mn\mathbf{M}_n(L), this formula shows that P is a homogeneous polynomial of degree nn in L[T,X]L[\mathbf{T},X]. It also belongs to K(T)[X]K(\mathbf{T})[X] and can be written as P(X)=∑j⩾0cjXjP(X) =\sum_{j\geqslant 0}c_jX^j, where each cjc_j belongs to the intersection K(T)∩L[T]K(\mathbf{T})\cap L[\mathbf{T}]. By Lemma 3, each of the elements cjc_j belongs to K[T]K[\mathbf{T}]; Lemma 4 follows.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
