Algebra, VIII, p. 346, § 17. Reduced Norms and Traces

Let L be a maximal commutative semisimple subalgebra of A and aa an element of L. We have

(52) PcrdA/K(a;X)=_{A/K}(a; X) = PcL/K(a;X)_{L/K}(a; X),

(53) TrdA/K(a)=_{A/K}(a) = TrL/K(a)_{L/K}(a),

(54) NrdA/K(a)=NL/K(a)_{A/K}(a) = N_{L/K}(a).

By Proposition 3 of VIII, p. 262, the L-modules A and LnL^n are isomorphic; we therefore have the relation

PcA/K(a;X)=_{A/K}(a; X) = PcL/K(a;X)n_{L/K}(a; X)^n.

Since the polynomial PcL/K(a;X)_{L/K}(a; X) is monic, it is therefore equal to the reduced characteristic polynomial PcrdA/K(a;X)_{A/K}(a; X) (VIII, p. 339, Lemma 2); this gives formula (52). By comparing the coefficients of Xn−1X^{n-1} (resp. the constant terms) on each side of (52), we obtain formula (53) (resp. (54)).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
