Algebra, VIII, p. 347, § 17. Reduced Norms and Traces

Let K′K' be a commutative algebra of finite degree dd over K and

P(X)=Xs+a1Xs−1+⋯+as P(X) = X^s+a_1X^{s-1}+\cdots +a_s

a monic polynomial with coefficients in K′K'. Then the polynomial Q = NK′[X]/K[X](P)N_{K'[X]/K[X]}(P) in K[X] is monic of degree sdsd, the coefficient of Xsd−1X^{sd-1} in Q(X) is equal to TrK′/K(a1)_{K'/K}(a_1), and the constant term of Q is NK′/K(as)N_{K'/K}(a_s).

We denote the K′K'-algebra K′[T]/(P(T))K'[T]/(P(T)) by K′′K'' and the canonical class of T in K′′K'' by tt. The sequence (1,t,...,ts−1)(1, t, . . . , t^{s-1}) is a basis of K′′K'' over K′K', and the matrix of multiplication by tt in this basis is of the form

τ=(00⋯0−as10⋯0−as−101⋯0−as−2⋮⋮⋱⋮⋮0⋯⋯1−a1). \tau = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 0 & \cdots & 0 & -a_s \\ 1 & 0 & \cdots & 0 & -a_{s-1} \\ 0 & 1 & \cdots & 0 & -a_{s-2} \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots & \vdots \\ 0 & \cdots & \cdots & 1 & -a_1 \end{pmatrix}.

The determinant of XIn−τXI_n - \tau is calculated by induction on ss, by expanding along the first row. We obtain det⁡(XIn−τ)=P(X)\det(XI_n - \tau) = P(X). In other words, we have P(X)=PcK′′/K′(t;X)P(X) = Pc_{K''/K'}(t; X). In particular, Tr⁡K′′/K′(t)=−a1\operatorname{Tr}_{K''/K'}(t) = -a_1 and NK′′/K′(t)=(−1)sasN_{K''/K'}(t) = (-1)^s a_s. By the transitivity formula (III, §9, No. 4, p. 548, Corollary), we have

Tr⁡K′′/K(t)=−Tr⁡K′/K(a1),NK′′/K(t)=(−1)sdNK′/K(as), \operatorname{Tr}_{K''/K}(t) = -\operatorname{Tr}_{K'/K}(a_1), \quad N_{K''/K}(t) = (-1)^{sd} N_{K'/K}(a_s),
Q(X)=PcK′′/K(t;X). Q(X) = Pc_{K''/K}(t; X).

On the other hand, [K′′:K]=[K′′:K′][K′:K]=sd[K'' : K] = [K'' : K'][K' : K] = sd, so Q(X)Q(X) is a monic polynomial of degree sdsd. Lemma 6 follows.

Let us prove Proposition 8. Since the ring BB is simple, its center LL is a field (VIII, p. 121, Corollary 1). By Theorem 5 of VIII, p. 259, the commutant B′B' of BB in AA is a simple ring with center LL, and we have the equality [A:K]=[B:K][B′:K][A : K] = [B : K][B' : K]. We denote the reduced degree of B′B' over LL by rr, that of BB over LL by ss, and the degree of LL over KK by dd. We have

[A:K]=n2,[B′:K]=r2d,[B:K]=s2d, [A : K] = n^2, \quad [B' : K] = r^2 d, \quad [B : K] = s^2 d,

and therefore n2=r2s2d2n^2 = r^2 s^2 d^2, that is, n=rsdn = rsd.

Let bb be an element of BB, and let P(X)P(X) be its reduced characteristic polynomial over the LL-algebra BB; it is monic of degree ss. By Lemma 6, the polynomial Q=NL[X]/K[X](P)Q = N_{L[X]/K[X]}(P) is monic of degree sdsd. The polynomial R=QrR = Q^r is therefore monic of degree rsd=nrsd = n. Again by Lemma 6, the coefficient of Xn−1X^{n-1} in R(X)R(X) is equal to −rTr⁡L/K(Trd⁡B/L(b))-r \operatorname{Tr}_{L/K}(\operatorname{Trd}_{B/L}(b)), and the constant term of R(X)R(X) is (NL/K((−1)sNrd⁡B/L(b)))r=(−1)nNL/K(Nrd⁡B/L(b))r(N_{L/K}((-1)^s \operatorname{Nrd}_{B/L}(b)))^r = (-1)^n N_{L/K}(\operatorname{Nrd}_{B/L}(b))^r.

Since [A:K]=r2d[B:K][A : K] = r^2 d[B : K], the left BB-module AA is free of rank r2dr^2 d (VIII, p. 124, Proposition 5). We therefore have

Pc⁡A/K(b;X)=Pc⁡B/K(b;X)dr2. \operatorname{Pc}_{A/K}(b; X) = \operatorname{Pc}_{B/K}(b; X)^{dr^2}.

By the corollary of III, §9, No. 4, p. 548, we have

Pc⁡B/K(b;X)=NL[X]/K[X](Pc⁡B/L(b;X)), \operatorname{Pc}_{B/K}(b; X) = N_{L[X]/K[X]}(\operatorname{Pc}_{B/L}(b; X)),

and since P(X) is the reduced characteristic polynomial of bb over the L-algebra B, we have

(62) PcB/L(b;X)=P(X)s_{B/L}(b; X) = P(X)^s.

Finally, by formulas (60)—(62) and the definition of R(X), we have

(63) PcA/K(b;X)=NL[X]/K[X](P(X))dr2s=Q(X)dr2s=R(X)rsd=R(X)n_{A/K}(b; X) = N_{L[X]/K[X]}(P(X))^{dr^2s}= Q(X)^{dr^2s}= R(X)^{rsd}= R(X)^n,

so R(X) is the reduced characteristic polynomial of bb over the K-algebra A.

We have proved formula (56). Formulas (57) and (58) follow immediately from formula (56) and Lemma 6 because the coefficient of Xn−1X^{n-1} in PcrdA/K(b;X)_{A/K}(b; X) is equal to −- TrdA/K(b)_{A/K}(b) and the constant term is (−1)n(-1)^n NrdA/K(b)_{A/K}(b).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
