Algebra, VIII, p. 351
Let B be an algebra of finite degree over the commutative field K. For any element of B, denote by Pm the minimal polynomial of over K (V, §3, No. 1, p. 16). We have Pm Pm.
a) Prove that Pm divides Pc, which divides (Pm).
b) For every extension L of K, we have Pm Pm.
c) Let be a basis of B over K and a family of variables. The principal polynomial of the algebra B with respect to the basis , denoted by or simply , is the minimal polynomial over of the element of Prove that it belongs to (cf. AC, VII, §3, n, p. 230, lemme 1 and théorème 2).
d) Let be another basis of B over K and the matrix with entries in K such that = for I; if we set = , then . Let be an element of B; the polynomial is independent of the choice of the basis ; we call it the principal polynomial of over K. It divides Pc and is a multiple of Pm
e) Let be another K-algebra of finite degree; calculate the principal polynomial of the algebra for a suitable basis.
