Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 2. Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, c\mathfrak{c} its centre, h\mathfrak{h} a vector subspace of g\mathfrak{g}. Then h\mathfrak{h} is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} if and only if h\mathfrak{h} contains c\mathfrak{c} and h/c\mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c} is a Cartan subalgebra of g/c\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{c}.

Assume that h\mathfrak{h} is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}. Since [c,g]⊂h[\mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{g}]\subset \mathfrak{h}, we have c⊂h\mathfrak{c}\subset \mathfrak{h}. On the other hand, h/c\mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c} is a Cartan subalgebra of g/c\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{c} by Cor. 2 of Prop. 4.

Assume that h⊃c\mathfrak{h}\supset \mathfrak{c} and that h/c\mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c} is a Cartan subalgebra of g/c\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{c}. Let ff be the canonical morphism from g\mathfrak{g} to g/c\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{c}. The algebra h\mathfrak{h}, which is a central extension of h/c\mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c}, is nilpotent. Let n\mathfrak{n} be the normalizer of h\mathfrak{h} in g\mathfrak{g}. If x∈nx\in \mathfrak{n}, [f(x),h/c]⊂h/c[f(x),\mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c}]\subset \mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c}, hence f(x)∈h/cf(x)\in \mathfrak{h}/\mathfrak{c}, and so x∈hx\in \mathfrak{h}. This proves that h\mathfrak{h} is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
