Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VII, § 3. Conjugacy theorems
Let be a Lie algebra, a subalgebra of . The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) contains a regular element of , and rk() rk();
(ii) contains a Cartan subalgebra of ;
(iii) every Cartan subalgebra of is a Cartan subalgebra of .
(i) (ii): Assume that rk() rk(), and that there exists regular in . Put . Then
rk() dim dim rk() rk()
so . This proves (ii).
(ii) (iii): Assume that contains a Cartan subalgebra of , and let be a Cartan subalgebra of . To prove that is a Cartan subalgebra of , we can assume that is algebraically closed. Let and be the groups of automorphisms of and associated to (no. 2). By Th. 1, there exists such that . Now every element of is induced by an element of ; indeed, it suffices to verify this for , with , in which case it follows from the inclusion . Thus is a Cartan subalgebra of .
(iii) (i): Assume that condition (iii) is satisfied. Let be a Cartan subalgebra of . Since this is a Cartan subalgebra of , it contains a regular element of (Th. 2 (ii)), and on the other hand rk() dim() rk().
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
