Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 3. Subalgebras of split semi-simple Lie algebras

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a semi-simple subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} stable under ad(h\mathfrak{h}) and let P be the subset of R such that a=hP+gP\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{h}_P+\mathfrak{g}^P.

(i) hP\mathfrak{h}_P is a splitting Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}.

(ii) The root system of (a,hP)(\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{h}_P) is the set of restrictions to hP\mathfrak{h}_P of elements of P.

Since hP\mathfrak{h}_P is stable under ad h\mathfrak{h}, its normalizer in a\mathfrak{a} is stable under ad h\mathfrak{h}, and hence is of the form hP+gQ\mathfrak{h}_P+\mathfrak{g}^Q where Q⊂PQ\subset P (Lemma 1). If α∈Q\alpha \in Q,

gα=[hα,gα]⊂[hP,gα]⊂hP \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}= [\mathfrak{h}_{\alpha},\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}]\subset [\mathfrak{h}_P,\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}]\subset \mathfrak{h}_P

which is absurd. Thus Q=∅Q =\emptyset and hP\mathfrak{h}_P is its own normalizer in a\mathfrak{a}. This proves that hP\mathfrak{h}_P is a Cartan subalgebra of a\mathfrak{a}. If x∈hPx\in \mathfrak{h}_P, adgx_{\mathfrak{g}}x, and a fortiori adax_{\mathfrak{a}}x, are triangularizable. Thus (i) is proved, and (ii) is clear.

By Prop. 1 (i), the subalgebras of g\mathfrak{g} containing h\mathfrak{h} are the sets h+gP\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{g}^P where P is a closed subset of R. By Chap. VII, §3, Prop. 3, every Cartan subalgebra of h+gP\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{g}^P is a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
