Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 2. Root system of a split semi-simple Lie algebra

Let Φ\Phi be the Killing form of g\mathfrak{g}. For all a,b∈ha, b\in \mathfrak{h},

Φ(a,b)=∑γ∈Rγ(a)γ(b) \Phi (a, b) =\sum_{\gamma\in R}\gamma (a)\gamma (b)

Indeed, ad aa.ad bb leaves each gγ\mathfrak{g}^{\gamma} stable, and its restriction to gγ\mathfrak{g}^{\gamma} is the homothety with ratio γ(a)γ(b)\gamma (a)\gamma (b); if γ≠0\gamma \not= 0, dimgγ=1\mathfrak{g}^{\gamma}= 1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
