Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 5. Automorphisms of a semi-simple Lie algebra

Assume that g\mathfrak{g} is splittable.

(i) The group Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) is dense in Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) in the Zariski topology.

(ii) The groups Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) and Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) are connected in the Zariski topology.

By Prop. 3,f(q(TP))⊂3,f(q(T_P))\subset Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}). For all s∈s\in Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}), the closure of s.f(q(TP))s.f(q(T_P)) in the Zariski topology contains s.f(TQ)s.f(T_Q) by Prop. 9. Hence the closure of Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) contains Aute(g).f(TQ)=_e(\mathfrak{g}).f(T_Q) = Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) (Prop. 6). This proves (i).

Let Aute(g)=Ω∪Ω′_e(\mathfrak{g}) =\Omega \cup \Omega ' be a partition of Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) formed by relatively open subsets in the Zariski topology, and with Ω≠∅\Omega \not=\emptyset. If ω∈Ω\omega \in \Omega and if xx is a nilpotent element of g\mathfrak{g}, the map τ:t→ω\tau :t \rightarrow \omega exp(tt ad xx) from kk to Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) is polynomial, hence continuous in the Zariski topology; consequently, τ(k)\tau (k) is connected; since ω∈τ(k)\omega \in \tau (k), we have τ(k)⊂Ω\tau (k)\subset \Omega. Thus, Ω\Omega.(exp ad kxkx)⊂Ω\subset \Omega, so Ω\Omega.Aute(g)⊂Ω_e(\mathfrak{g})\subset \Omega and Ω=\Omega = Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}). This proves that Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) is connected. It follows, by (i), that Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) is connected. Q.E.D.

We shall see (§8, no. 4, Cor. of Prop. 6) that Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) is closed in V in the Zariski topology, and that it is the connected component of the identity element of Aut(g\mathfrak{g}). On the other hand, Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) is not in general closed in the Zariski topology.

\*Assume that (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) is split. The group Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) is the group G(k)G(k) of kk-points of a connected semi-simple algebraic group G with trivial centre (adjoint group). The group f(TQ)f(T_Q) is equal to H(k)H(k), where H is the Cartan subgroup of G with Lie algebra h\mathfrak{h}. The inverse image H~\widetilde{H} of H in the universal covering G~\widetilde{G} of G (in the algebraic sense) has TPT_P as its group of kk-points. The image of G~(k)\widetilde{G}(k) in G(k)=G(k) = Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) is the group Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}).\*

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
