Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 6. Modules over a split semi-simple Lie algebra
Let V be a simple -module, a weight of V. The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) every weight of V is of the form where is a radical weight ;
(ii) is the highest weight of V;
(iii) for all is not a weight of V;
(iv) there exists a primitive element of weight .
(i) (ii) (iii): This is clear.
(iii) (iv): Assume that condition (iii) is satisfied. For all ,
Ker()
is non-zero, contained in , and stable under . By induction on dim , we see that there exists a non-zero in such that . Condition (iii) implies that , so is primitive.
(iv) (i): Let be a primitive element of weight . Since V is simple, V is generated by as a -module. Assertion (i) now follows from Prop. 1.
Q.E.D.
Thus, for any simple -module, the existence of a primitive element is equivalent to that of a highest weight, or to that of a maximal weight. There exist simple )-modules V that have no weights for any Cartan subalgebra of §1, Exerc. . These modules are of infinite dimension over §1, no. 3, Th. 1).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
