Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VIII, 248

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Apply the notations and results of Exerc. 25 to the case in which a=g\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{g} (split case).

a) Let x∈Gx\in G and let σ=v(x)\sigma =v(x) be its image in Aut(g\mathfrak{g}). If ρ\rho is a representation of g,ρ\mathfrak{g},\rho and ρ∘σ\rho \circ \sigma are equivalent. Deduce (cf. no. 2, Remark 1) that σ\sigma belongs to Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}). Extend this result to arbitrary semi-simple algebras.

b) Let φ∈TP=\varphi \in T_P= Hom(P,k∗, k^*), where P = P(R). If E is a g\mathfrak{g}-module, let φE\varphi_E be the endomorphism of E whose restriction to each Eλ(λ∈P)E^{\lambda}(\lambda \in P) is the homothety of ratio φ(λ)\varphi (\lambda ). Show that there exists a unique element t(φ)∈Gt(\varphi )\in G such that t(φ)E=φEt(\varphi )_E=\varphi_E for all E (Use Exerc. 24c24c), and the characterizations (ii) and (vi) of Exerc. 25.) This gives a homomorphism t:TP→Gt: T_P\rightarrow G. Show that tt is injective. We use this to identify TPT_P with a subgroup of G. The composite TP→G→T_P\rightarrow G\rightarrow Aut(g\mathfrak{g}) is the homomorphism denoted by f∘qf\circ q in §5, no. 2.

c) Let x∈Gx\in G be such that σ=v(x)\sigma =v(x) belongs to the subgroup f(TQ)f(T_Q) of Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) (§5, no. 2), in other words, such that it operates trivially on h\mathfrak{h}; denote the element of TQ=T_Q= Hom(Q,k∗, k^*) corresponding to xx by ψ\psi. We are going to show that xx belongs to TPT_P. Prove successively:

c1)c_1) If E is a g\mathfrak{g}-module, xEx_E is an h\mathfrak{h}-endomorphism of E.

(Use the g\mathfrak{g}-homomorphism g⊗E→E\mathfrak{g}\otimes E\rightarrow E, and the fact that xx operates trivially on h.\mathfrak{h}.) In particular, the EμE^\mu are stable under xEx_E.

c2)c_2) There exists φ∈TP\varphi \in T_P such that, for every g\mathfrak{g}-module E, and every primitive element ee of E of weight λ\lambda, we have xEe=φ(λ)ex_Ee=\varphi (\lambda )e.

(Choose φ\varphi such that this relation is true when E is a fundamental module E(ϖα)E(\varpi_{\alpha}). Deduce the case of the E(λ),λ∈P++E(\lambda ),\lambda \in P_{++}, by using the embedding of

16∗^{16*}In this case, it can be shown that U′U' is the bigebra of the simply-connected

semi-simple algebraic group A with Lie algebra a\mathfrak{a}, and that G is the group of

kk-points of AA.\* such a module in a tensor product of the E(ϖα)E(\varpi_{\alpha}). Pass from this to the general case.)

c3)c_3) Choose φ\varphi as in c2)c_2). Let E be a simple g\mathfrak{g}-module of highest weight λ\lambda, and let μ\mu be a weight of E; then λ−μ∈Q\lambda -\mu\in Q. Show that the restriction of xEx_E to EμE^\mu is the homothety of ratio φ(λ)ψ(μ−λ)\varphi (\lambda )\psi (\mu-\lambda ). (Same method as for c1c_1).).)

c4)c_4) If λ,μ∈P++\lambda , \mu\in P_{++}, and if α∈B\alpha \in B is not orthogonal to either λ\lambda or μ\mu, then

φ(λ+μ−α)=φ(λ+μ)ψ(−α) \varphi (\lambda +\mu-\alpha ) =\varphi (\lambda +\mu)\psi (-\alpha )

so φ(α)=ψ(α)\varphi (\alpha ) =\psi (\alpha ). (Use c2c_2),c3),c_3), and the embedding of E(λ+μ−α)E(\lambda +\mu-\alpha ) in E(λ)⊗E(μ)E(\lambda )\otimes E(\mu), cf. Exerc. 17.)

c5)c_5) Deduce from c4)c_4) that φ∣Q=ψ\varphi |Q =\psi, and use c3)c_3) to deduce that x=t(φ)x=t(\varphi ). d) Identify TQT_Q with a subgroup of Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g}) by means of ff. By a), we have

Aute(g)⊂v(G)⊂_e(\mathfrak{g})\subset v(G)\subset Aut0(g)_0(\mathfrak{g})

and, by c),v(G)∩TQ=c),v(G)\cap T_Q= Im(TP_P). Deduce (cf. §5, no. 3) that Aute(g)∩TQ=_e(\mathfrak{g})\cap T_Q= Im(TP_P) and that f(G)=f(G) = Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}). The canonical map

ι:TQ/\iota : T_Q/Im(TP_P)→\rightarrow Aut0(g)/_0(\mathfrak{g})/Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g})

is therefore an isomorphism.

e) The kernel of v:G→v: G\rightarrow Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}) is equal to the kernel of TP→TQT_P\rightarrow T_Q; it is isomorphic to

Hom(P/Q,k∗/Q, k^*);

this is a finite abelian group contained in the centre of G, and its order divides (P : Q); if kk is algebraically closed, it is isomorphic to the dual of P/Q(P/Q (Algebra, Chap. VII, §4, no. 8).

f) Let α∈R,Xα∈gα\alpha \in R, X_{\alpha}\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha} and X−α∈g−αX_{-\alpha}\in \mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha} be such that [Xα,X−α]=−Hα[X_{\alpha}, X_{-\alpha}] =-H_{\alpha}, and let ρα\rho_{\alpha} be the corresponding representation of sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k) on g\mathfrak{g}. If E is a g\mathfrak{g}-module, deduce (§1, no. 4) a representation of SL(2,k)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{L}(2, k) on E, and hence (Exerc. 25 bb),c)),c)) a homomorphism

φα:SL(2,k)→G \varphi_{\alpha}:\mathbf{S}\mathbf{L}(2, k)\rightarrow G

Show that Im(φα\varphi_{\alpha}) contains the elements of TPT_P of the form λ→tλ(Hα),t∈k∗\lambda \rightarrow t^{\lambda(H_{\alpha})},t\in k^*. Deduce that the Im(φα\varphi_{\alpha}),α∈B,\alpha \in B, generate G (show first that the group they generate contains TPT_P). In particular, G is generated by the ene^n, with n∈gαn\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}, α∈B∪−B\alpha \in B\cup -B. The derived group of G is equal to G.

g) If a subgroup G′G' of G is such that v(G′)=v(G') = Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g}), then G′=GG'= G (use ff))). h) Let E be a faithful g\mathfrak{g}-module, and let Γ\Gamma be the subgroup of P generated by the weights of E. Then P⊃Γ⊃QP\supset \Gamma \supset Q, cf. Exerc. 5. Show that the kernel of the canonical homomorphism G→GL(E)G\rightarrow \mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(E) is equal to the subgroup of TPT_P consisting of the elements φ\varphi whose restriction to Γ\Gamma is trivial. In particular, if Γ\Gamma = P the homomorphism G→GL(E)G\rightarrow \mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(E) is injective. If Γ\Gamma = Q, this homomorphism factorizes as G ⟶v\longrightarrow^v Aute(g)⟶GL(E)_e(\mathfrak{g})\longrightarrow \mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(E), and the homomorphism Aute(g)→GL(E)_e(\mathfrak{g})\rightarrow \mathbf{G}\mathbf{L}(E) is injective.
