Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 394

Denote by K one of the fields R,C\mathbf{R},\mathbf{C} or H\mathbf{H}, and by nn an integer ≥1\geq 1. Give the space KsnK^n_s the usual hermitian form.

a) Show that U(n,K)\mathbf{U}(n,K) is a compact real Lie group.

b) Show that the sphere of radius 1 in KsnK^n_s is a (real) Lie homogeneous space for U(n,K)\mathbf{U}(n,K); the fixer of a point is isomorphic to U(n−1,K)\mathbf{U}(n-1,K).

c) Deduce that the groups U(n,C)\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C}) and U(n,H)\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{H}) are connected, and that O(n,R)\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) has two connected components.

d) Show that the groups SO(n,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) and SU(n,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C}) are connected.

e) Show that the group O(n,R)\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) (resp. U(n,C)\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C})) is the semi-direct product of Z/2Z\mathbf{Z}/2\mathbf{Z} (resp. T\mathbf{T}) by SO(n,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) (resp. SU(n,C)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{U}(n,\mathbf{C})).
