Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 395

For nn an integer ≥1\geq 1, denote by Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) the reduced Clifford group associated to the usual quadratic form on Rn(\mathbf{R}^n(Algebra, Chap. IX, §9, no. 5).

a) Show that Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) is a compact Lie group and that the surjective homomorphism φ:\varphi : Spin(n,R)→SO(n,R)((n,\mathbf{R})\rightarrow \mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}) (loc. cit.) is analytic, with kernel {+1,−1}\{+1,-1\}.

b) Show that, for n≥2n\geq 2, Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}) is connected and simply-connected (use Exerc. 2). The group π1(SO(n,R))\pi_1(\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R})) is cyclic of order 2.

c) Let ZnZ_n be the centre of Spin(n,R)(n,\mathbf{R}). Show that Zn={+1,−1}Z_n=\{+1,-1\} if nn is odd, and Zn={+1,−1,ε,−ε}Z_n=\{+1,-1, \varepsilon ,-\varepsilon \} if nn is even, where ε=e1...en\varepsilon =e_1. . . e_n is the product of the elements of the canonical basis of Rn\mathbf{R}^n; the group Z2rZ_{2r} is isomorphic to (Z/2Z)2(\mathbf{Z}/2\mathbf{Z})^2 (resp. to Z/4Z\mathbf{Z}/4\mathbf{Z}) if rr is even (resp. odd).

d) Prove that every almost simple connected compact Lie group of type BnB_n (n≥2)(n\geq 2) is isomorphic to Spin(2n+1,R)(2n+ 1,\mathbf{R}) or SO(2n+1,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2n+ 1,\mathbf{R}).

e) If rr is odd (resp. even) and ≥2\geq 2, every almost simple connected compact Lie group of type DrD_r is isomorphic to Spin(2r,R),SO(2r,R)(2r,\mathbf{R}),\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2r,\mathbf{R}) or SO(2r,R)/{±I2r}\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2r,\mathbf{R})/\{\pm I_{2r}\} (resp. to one of the preceding groups or Spin(2r,R)/{1,ε}(2r,\mathbf{R})/\{1, \varepsilon \}).
