Let g\mathfrak{g} be a compact Lie algebra, t\mathfrak{t} a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}; let (Xα)α∈R(X_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in R} be a Chevalley system in the split reductive algebra (gC,tC)(\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbf{C}},\mathfrak{t}_{\mathbf{C}}) such that XαX_{\alpha} and X−αX_{-\alpha} are conjugate (with respect to g\mathfrak{g}) for all α∈R\alpha \in R.

a) Let T\mathscr{T} be a Z\mathbf{Z}-submodule of tC\mathfrak{t}_{\mathbf{C}} containing the iHα(α∈R)iH_{\alpha}(\alpha \in R) and such that α(T)⊂Zi\alpha (\mathscr{T})\subset \mathbf{Z}i for all α∈R\alpha \in R. Show that the Z\mathbf{Z}-submodule G\mathscr{G} of gC\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbf{C}} generated by T\mathscr{T} and the elements uαu_{\alpha} and vα(α∈R)v_{\alpha}(\alpha \in R) is a Z\mathbf{Z}-Lie subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}.

b) Assume that g\mathfrak{g} (resp. t\mathfrak{t}) is the Lie algebra of a compact group G (resp. of a maximal torus T of G). Let Γ(T)\Gamma (T) be the kernel of the homomorphism expT:t→T_T:\mathfrak{t}\rightarrow T. Show that the Z\mathbf{Z}-module (2π)−1Γ(T)(2\pi )^{-1}\Gamma (T) satisfies the hypotheses of a).

c) Let ⟨,⟩\langle ,\rangle be an invariant scalar product on g\mathfrak{g}; let μ\mu (resp. τ\tau ) be the Haar measure on g\mathfrak{g} (resp. t\mathfrak{t}) corresponding to the Lebesgue measure when g\mathfrak{g} (resp. t\mathfrak{t}) is identified with a space Rn\mathbf{R}^n by means of an orthonormal basis. Denote also by μ\mu (resp. τ\tau ) the measure on g/G\mathfrak{g}/\mathscr{G} (resp. t/T\mathfrak{t}/\mathscr{T}) that is the quotient of μ\mu (resp. τ\tau ) by the normalized Haar measure on G\mathscr{G} (resp. T\mathscr{T}). Prove the formula μ(g/G)=τ(t/T).∏α∈R+⟨iHα,iHα⟩\mu(\mathfrak{g}/\mathscr{G}) =\tau (\mathfrak{t}/\mathscr{T}).\prod_{\alpha\in R_+}\langle iH_{\alpha},iH_{\alpha}\rangle.
