Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, IX, 407

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Assume that G is simply-connected. Let pp be a prime number and gg an element of C(G) such that gp=eg^p=e.

a) Show that there exist elements u∈Tu\in T and w∈Ww\in W such that

(i) w(u)u−1=gw(u)u^{-1}=g;

(ii) wp=1w^p= 1;

(iii) up=eu^p=e if p≠2,up=ep\not= 2,u^p=e or gg if p=2p= 2.

(Let A be an alcove in t\mathfrak{t}; for i=0,1,...,p−1i= 0,1, . . . , p-1, let xi∈A‾x_i\in \overline{A} be such that exp xi=gix_i=g^i. Take uu to be the element exp xx, where xx is the barycentre of the facet of A‾\overline{A} whose vertices are the xix_i, and ww to be the element of W such that w(A)=A−x.w(A) = A-x.)

b) Prove that there exist u∈Tu\in T and v∈NG(T)v\in N_G(T) such that

(i) vuv−1u−1=gvuv^{-1}u^{-1}=g;

(ii) vp=ev^p=e if p≠2,vp=ep\not= 2,v^p=e or gg if p=2p= 2;

(iii) up=eu^p=e if p≠2,up=ep\not= 2,u^p=e or gg if p=2p= 2.

(Use the construction in aa), lifting ww to nwn_w as in Exerc. 12 of §4; take v=nwp+1v=n^{p+1}_w if p≠2,v=nwp\not= 2,v=n_w if p=2.)p= 2.)
