Let G=SO(2l,R)G =\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(2l,\mathbf{R}), with l≥2l\geq 2; we use the notations of Exerc. 2 of §4. Denote by σ\sigma the representation of G on C2l\mathbf{C}^{2l} obtained from the identity representation by extension of scalars.

a) The Z\mathbf{Z}-module X(T) has basis ε1,...,εl\varepsilon_1, . . . , \varepsilon_l.

b) Denote by ηi\eta_i the element eεi+e−εie^{\varepsilon_i}+e^{-\varepsilon_i} of Z[X(T)]\mathbf{Z}[X(T)] and by δ\delta the element

∏i=1l(eεi−e−εi)\prod_{i=1}^l(e^{\varepsilon_i}-e^{-\varepsilon_i}). Show that every element of Z[X(T)]W\mathbf{Z}[X(T)]^W can be written as

P(η1,...,ηl)+Q(η1,...,ηl)δP(\eta_1, . . . , \eta_l) + Q(\eta_1, . . . , \eta_l)\delta, where P and Q are symmetric polynomials in ll variables with coefficients in 12Z\frac{1}{2}\mathbf{Z}.

c) Show that the representations ∧∧rσ\wedge \wedge^r\sigma are irreducible for r≠lr\not=l; the representation ∧∧lσ\wedge \wedge^l\sigma is the direct sum of two subrepresentations τ+\tau^+ and τ−\tau^-, of highest weights 2ϖl2\varpi_l and 2ϖl−12\varpi_{l-1}, respectively (see Chap. VIII, §13, Exerc. 10).

d) Show that, for r≤lr\leq l, the element Ch(∧∧rσ\wedge \wedge^r\sigma ) is given by the formula in Exerc. 2c)2c) and that

Ch(τ+\tau^+) =12(δ+=\frac{1}{2}(\delta + Ch(∧∧lσ\wedge \wedge^l\sigma )) Ch(τ−\tau^-) =12(−δ+=\frac{1}{2}(-\delta + Ch(∧∧lσ\wedge \wedge^l\sigma )).

e) Show that the homomorphism u:Z[X1,...,Xl;Y]→R(G)u:\mathbf{Z}[X_1, . . . ,X_l; Y]\rightarrow R(G) such that u(Xi)=[∧∧iσ]u(X_i) = [\wedge \wedge^i\sigma ] and u(Y)=[τ+]u(Y) = [\tau^+] is surjective, and that its kernel is generated by Y2−Y^2- YXl+A_l+ A, with A∈Z[X1,...,Xl]A\in \mathbf{Z}[X_1, . . . ,X_l].
