Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 9. Compact Lie groups operating on manifolds
Let G be a Lie group.
a) Every decreasing sequence of compact subgroups of G is stationary.
b) Let H and be two compact subgroups of G such that and such that there exists an isomorphism (of topological groups) from to H. Then .
c) With the relation , the set is a noetherian ordered set (Theory of Sets, Chap. III, §6, no. 5, text preceding Prop. 7).
a) Let be a decreasing sequence of compact subgroups of G; these are Lie subgroups of G (Chap. III, §8, no. 2, Th. 2). The sequence of integers (dim ) is decreasing, hence stationary, so there exists an integer N such that the subgroups have the same identity component for . Then the decreasing sequence of positive integers is stationary, so for sufficiently large.
b) Let be an isomorphism from to H. The sequence is a decreasing sequence of compact subgroups of G, so for sufficiently large, by a). Since is an isomorphism, this implies that , so .
c) Let be such that and . Then, there exist and such that and . Let and be two elements of G such that and ; put . Then
by b), this implies that , so and . Thus, the set is ordered, and it is noetherian by a).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
