Theory of Sets, III, 232

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Let EE be a distributive lattice (§ 1, Exercise 16). If aa is irreducible in EE (Exercise 7), show that the relation a≤sup⁡(x,y)a\leq\sup(x,y) implies a≤xa\leq x or a≤ya\leq y.

(b) Let EE be a finite distributive lattice and let JJ be the set of its irreducible elements, ordered by the induced ordering. Show that the isomorphism x→S(x)x\to S(x) of EE onto a subset of P(J)\mathfrak{P}(J) defined in Exercise 7 (b) is such that S(sup⁡(x,y))=S(x)∪S(y)S(\sup(x,y))=S(x)\cup S(y). Deduce that if J∗J^* is the ordered set obtained by endowing JJ with the opposite ordering, then EE is isomorphic to the set A0(J∗,I)\mathscr{A}_0(J^*,I) of increasing mappings of J∗J^* into I={0,1}I=\{0,1\} (§ 1, Exercise 6).

(c) With the hypotheses of (b), let PP be the set of elements of JJ other then the least element of EE. For each x∈Ex\in E, let y1,…,yky_1,\ldots,y_k be the distinct minimal elements of the interval ]x,→[]x,\to[ in EE; for each index ii let qiq_i be an element of PP such that qi∉S(x)q_i\notin S(x) and qi∈S(yi)q_i\in S(y_i). Show that no two of the elements q1,…,qkq_1,\ldots,q_k are comparable.

(d) Conversely, let q1q_1, ..., qkq_k be kk elements of P, no two of which are comparable. Let u=sup⁡(q1,…,qk)u = \sup{(q_1, \ldots, q_k)} and let

vi=sup⁡1⩽j⩽k, j≠i(qj)(1⩽i⩽k).v_i = \sup_{1 \leqslant j \leqslant k,\, j \neq i} (q_j) \qquad (1 \leqslant i \leqslant k).

Show that vi<uv_i < u for 1⩽i⩽k1 \leqslant i \leqslant k. Let x=inf⁡(v1,…,vk)x = \inf{(v_1, \ldots, v_k)} and let

yi=inf⁡1⩽j⩽k, j≠i(vj).y_i = \inf_{1 \leqslant j \leqslant k,\, j \neq i} (v_j).

Show that x<yix < y_i for each index ii, and deduce that the interval ]x,→[]x, \rightarrow[ has at least kk distinct minimal elements.
