Theory of Sets, III, 244
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be an ordinal , and for each ordinal let denote the set of exponents in the expression for given in Exercise 12 (a).
(a) Show that for each , and that for one of these ordinals only if or if is a critical ordinal with respect to (Exercise 14 (c)).
(b) Define by induction on as follows : , and is the union of the sets as runs through . Show that there exists an integer such that whenever , and that the elements of are then either 0 or critical ordinals with respect to . (Argue by contradiction: for each , consider the set of elements such that , and assume that is not empty for any ; use (a) to obtain a contradiction.)
