Commutative Algebra, chapter I, § 3. Faithfully flat modules
Let be a commutative ring, an algebra over and the canonical homomorphism of to . Suppose that is a faithfully flat -module. Then, for an -module to be flat (resp. faithfully flat), it is necessary and sufficient that the right -module be flat (resp. faithfully flat).
(1) If is flat (resp. faithfully flat), is flat (resp. faithfully flat) by § 2, no. 7, Corollary 2 to Proposition 8 (resp. by Proposition 5).
(2) Suppose that is flat and let be an injective -module homomorphism. By § 2, no. 7, Corollary 3, the -module is flat, hence the homomorphism is injective. As the right and left -module structures on coincide, this homomorphism is identified with
As is a faithfully flat -module, it follows that is injective (no. 1, Proposition 2), which shows that is flat.
(3) Suppose finally that is faithfully flat. First of all is flat by (2). Also let be an -module such that . Then , whence, since the right and left -module structures on coincide, , which may also be written . As is a faithfully flat -module, this implies that (no. 1, Proposition 1), whence since is a faithfully flat -module (no. 1, Proposition 1).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
