Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 3. m-adic topologies on Noetherian rings

Let A\mathbf{A} be a Noetherian local ring, mm its maximal ideal, A^\hat{\mathbf{A}} its mm-adic completion and BB a ring such that A⊂B⊂A^\mathbf{A} \subset B \subset \hat{\mathbf{A}}. Suppose that BB is a Noetherian local ring whose maximal ideal nn satisfies the relation n=mBn = mB. Then

nk=mkB=m^k∩B n^k = m^kB = \hat{m}^k \cap B

for all k≥1k \geq 1, the nn-adic topology on BB is induced by the mm-adic topology on A^\hat{\mathbf{A}}, BB is a faithfully flat A\mathbf{A}-module and there is an isomorphism of A^\hat{\mathbf{A}} onto the nn-adic completion B^\hat{B} of BB, which extends the canonical injection A→B\mathbf{A} \to B.

It is sufficient to verify the relation nk=m^k∩Bn^k = \hat{m}^k \cap B, for, as BB is dense in A^\hat{\mathbf{A}} and the nn-adic topology is induced by the mm-adic topology, the last assertion will follow from General Topology, Chapter II, § 3, no. 9, Corollary 1 to Proposition 18 and the last but one from Proposition 10. The injection jA:A→A^j_A : \mathbf{A} \to \hat{\mathbf{A}} (resp. j:B→A^j : B \to \hat{\mathbf{A}}) defines by taking quotients an injective homomorphism

i1:A/(m^∩A)→A^/m^ i_1 : \mathbf{A}/(\hat{m} \cap \mathbf{A}) \to \hat{\mathbf{A}}/\hat{m}

(resp. iB:B/(m^∩B)→A^/m^i_B : B/(\hat{m} \cap B) \to \hat{\mathbf{A}}/\hat{m}). We know that m∩A=mm \cap \mathbf{A} = m and that iAi_A is bijective, hence iBi_B is bijective, which shows that B/(m^∩B)B/(\hat{m} \cap B) is a field, hence that m^∩B\hat{m} \cap B is a maximal ideal of BB and therefore m∩B=nm \cap B = n. As A=A+m\mathbf{A} = \mathbf{A} + m, B=A+n=A+mBB = A + n = A + mB; by induction on kk we deduce that

B=A+mkB=A+nk B = A + m^kB = A + n^k

for all k>1k > 1. As nk⊂m^k∩Bn^k \subset \hat{m}^k \cap B, it is sufficient to show that m^k∩B⊂nk\hat{m}^k \cap B \subset n^k; if b∈m^k∩Bb \in \hat{m}^k \cap B, we may write b=a+zb = a + z where a∈Aa \in \mathbf{A}, z∈nkz \in n^k; whence

a=b−z∈m^k∩A=mk⊂nk a = b - z \in \hat{m}^k \cap \mathbf{A} = m^k \subset n^k

and b∈nkb \in n^k.

\* An important case where this applies is the following: BB is the ring of integral series in nn variables over a complete valued field, which converge in the neighbourhood of 0, A\mathbf{A} is the local ring

K[X1,…,Xn]p K[X_1, \ldots, X_n]_{\mathfrak{p}}

where p\mathfrak{p} is the maximal ideal consisting of the polynomials with no constant term and A^\hat{\mathbf{A}} is the ring of formal power series K[[X1,…,Xn]]K[[X_1, \ldots, X_n]]. \*

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
