Let M be an A-module and Φ a subset of Ass(M). Then there exists a submodule N of M such thatAss(N)=Ass(M)−ΦandAss(M/N)=Φ.
Let E be the set of submodules P of M such that Ass(P)⊂Ass(M)−Φ. Formula (1) shows that the set E, ordered by inclusion, is inductive; moreover, {0}∈E and hence E=∅. Let N be a maximal element of E. Then Ass(N)⊂Ass(M)−Φ. We shall see that Ass(M/N)⊂Φ, which, by Proposition 3, will complete the proof. Let p∈Ass(M/N); then M/N contains a submodule F/N isomorphic to A/p. By Propositions 1 and 3, Ass(F)⊂Ass(N)∪{p}. Since N is maximal in E, F∈/E and hence p∈Φ.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
