Commutative Algebra, chapter IV, § 1. Prime ideals associated with a module
Let A be a Noetherian ring, M an A-module, S a multiplicative subset of A and Y the set of elements of which do not meet S. Then the kernel N of the canonical mapping is the unique submodule of M which satisfies the relations
By Proposition 4 of no. 1, there exists a submodule of M which satisfies the relations and . We need to prove . Consider the commutative diagram
where are the canonical homomorphisms. We shall show that and are injective, which will prove that and have the same kernel and hence .
As , every element of meets S. Then (Corollary to Proposition 5), whence (no. 1, Corollary 1 to Proposition 2), which proves that is injective (Chapter II, §2, no. 4, Theorem 1). On the other hand, if belongs to the kernel K of , then (Chapter II, §2, no. 2, Proposition 4); hence since ; we deduce that (no. 1, Corollary 1 to Proposition 2) and is injective.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
