Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 1. Valuation rings

*Let KK be a field, K(X)K(X) the field of rational functions in one indeterminate over KK and VV a valuation ring of K(X)K(X) containing KK and distinct from K(X)K(X). If X∈VX \in V, there exists an irreducible polynomial P∈K[X]P \in K[X] such that V=(K[X])(P)V = (K[X])_{(P)}; otherwise VV is the local ring of K[X−1]K[X^{-1}] at the prime ideal X−1K[X−1]X^{-1}K[X^{-1}] (in other words VV is composed of the fractions A/BA/B, where A∈K[X]A \in K[X] and B∈K[X]B \in K[X], such that deg⁡(A)≤deg⁡(B)\deg(A) \leq \deg(B)).

If X∈VX \in V, then K[X]⊂VK[X] \subset V and the assertion made follows from Proposition 3. If X∉VX \notin V, then X−1∈VX^{-1} \in V, whence K[X−1]⊂VK[X^{-1}] \subset V; then VV is the local ring of K[X−1]K[X^{-1}] at a prime ideal pp (Proposition 3) and this ideal contains X−1X^{-1} since X−1X^{-1} is not invertible in V; then p=X−1K[X−1]p = X^{-1}K[X^{-1}] since the latter ideal is maximal. Finally let us consider a rational function A(X)/B(X)A(X)/B(X), where A and B are polynomials of respective degrees aa and bb; then A(X)=XaA′(X−1)A(X) = X^a A'(X^{-1}) and B(X)=XbB′(X−1)B(X) = X^b B'(X^{-1}), where A′A' and B′B' are polynomials such that A′(0)≠0A'(0) \neq 0 and B′(0)≠0B'(0) \neq 0; hence, for A(X)/B(X)A(X)/B(X) to belong to the local ring of K[X−1]K[X^{-1}] at X−1K[X−1]X^{-1}K[X^{-1}], it is necessary and sufficient that a≤ba \leq b.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
