Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 1. Valuation rings

*Let AA be a principal ideal domain and KK its field of fractions. The valuation rings of KK containing AA and distinct from KK are the rings of the form AApA_{Ap}, where pp is an extremal element of AA.

Clearly AApA_{Ap} (pp extremal) is a valuation ring containing AA and distinct from KK (Proposition 2). Conversely, let VV be a valuation ring distinct from KK and containing AA. As V≠KV \neq K, m(V)m(V) contains an element x≠0x \neq 0; writing x=a/bx = a/b where a∈Aa \in A and b∈Ab \in A, it is seen that A∩m(V)A \cap m(V) contains the non-zero element aa. As A∩m(V)A \cap m(V) is prime, it is of the form ApAp where pp is extremal in AA. Then AAp⊂V,pAAp⊂m(V)A_{Ap} \subset V, pA_{Ap} \subset m(V), so that VV dominates AApA_{Ap}; as AApA_{Ap} is a valuation ring of KK (Proposition 2), V=AApV = A_{Ap}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
