Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 4. The height of a valuation

Let GG be an ordered group and PP the set of its positive elements.

(a) The kernel of an increasing homomorphism of GG to an ordered group is an isolated subgroup of GG.

(b) Conversely, let HH be an isolated subgroup of GG and gg the canonical homomorphism of GG onto G/HG/H. Then g(P)g(P) is the set of positive elements of an ordered group structure on G/HG/H. Moreover, if GG is totally ordered, so is G/HG/H.

(a) Let ff be an increasing homomorphism from GG to an ordered group; let HH denote the kernel off. If 0≤y≤x0 \leq y \leq x and x∈Hx \in H, then 0≤f(y)≤f(x)=00 \leq f(y) \leq f(x) = 0, whence f(y)=0f(y) = 0, that is y∈Hy \in H. Hence HH is isolated.

(b) Let HH be an isolated subgroup of GG and g:G→G/Hg : G \to G/H. Let P′=g(P)P' = g(P). Clearly P′+P′⊂P′P' + P' \subset P'. Also

P′∩(−P′)={0}, P' \cap (-P') = \{0\},

for, if xx and yy are elements of PP such that g(x)=−g(y)g(x) = -g(y), then x+y∈Hx + y \in H, whence x∈Hx \in H and y∈Hy \in H since HH is isolated; hence g(x)=g(y)=0g(x) = g(y) = 0. Thus P′P' is the set of positive elements of an ordered group structure on G/HG/H (Algebra, Chapter VI, § 1, no. 3, Proposition 3). Finally, if GG is totally ordered, then P∩(−P)=GP \cap (-P) = G, whence P′∪(−P′)=G/HP' \cup (-P') = G/H and therefore G/HG/H is totally ordered (loc. cit.).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
