Algebra, chapter I, § 2. Identity element; cancellable elements; invertible elements

Under a law of composition ⊤\top on a set EE an element ee of EE is called an identity element if, for all x∈Ex \in E, e⊤x=x⊤e=xe \top x = x \top e = x.

There exists at most one identity element under a given law ⊤\top, for if ee and e′e' are identity elements then e=e⊤e′=e′e = e \top e' = e'. An identity element is permutable with every element: it is a central element.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
