Algebra, chapter I, § 5. Groups operating on a set

In the notation of Theorem 2, the number ε(σ)\varepsilon(\sigma) (also denoted εσ\varepsilon_\sigma) is called the signature of the permutation σ\sigma. The kernel of the homomorphism ε\varepsilon is called the alternating group of E.

σ\sigma is called even (resp. odd) if ε(σ)=1\varepsilon(\sigma) = 1 (resp. ε(σ)=−1\varepsilon(\sigma) = -1). The alternating group of E is denoted by AE\mathfrak{A}_E. It is a normal subgroup of SE\mathfrak{S}_E. When E={1,n}E = \{1, n\}, it is simply denoted by An\mathfrak{A}_n. When the cardinal nn of E is ≥2\geq 2, it is a subgroup of index 2 and hence of order n!/2n! / 2. It can be shown that, for n=3n = 3 or n≥5n \geq 5, the group An\mathfrak{A}_n is a simple group (cf. Exercise 16).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
