Algebra, chapter I, § 7. Free monoids, free groups

Let g be an element of the free group F(X)F(X). There exist an integer n≥0n \geq 0 and a sequence (xα,m(α))1≤α≤n(x_\alpha, m(\alpha))_{1 \leq \alpha \leq n} determined uniquely by the relations xα∈Xx_\alpha \in X, xα≠xα+1x_\alpha \neq x_{\alpha+1} for 1≤α<n1 \leq \alpha < n, m(α)∈Zm(\alpha) \in \mathbf{Z}, m(α)≠0m(\alpha) \neq 0 for 1≤α≤n1 \leq \alpha \leq n, and g=∏α=1nxαm(α)g = \prod_{\alpha=1}^n x_\alpha^{m(\alpha)}.

The free group F(X)F(X) enjoys the following universal property:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
