Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

Let u be an element of E⊗KFE \otimes_K F and M⊂EM \subset E and N⊂FN \subset F its associated subspaces. For every expression u=∑i=1sxi⊗yiu = \sum_{i=1}^s x_i \otimes y_i of uu, where xi∈Ex_i \in E and yi∈Fy_i \in F for 1≤i≤s1 \leq i \leq s, the subspace MM (resp. NN) is contained in the subspace of EE (resp. FF) generated by the xix_i (resp. the yiy_i). Moreover, the following properties are equivalent:

(a) The integer ss is equal to the rank of uu. (b) The family (xi)1≤i≤s(x_i)_{1 \leq i \leq s} is a basis of MM. (c) The family (yi)1≤i≤s(y_i)_{1 \leq i \leq s} is a basis of NN. (d) The families (xi)1≤i≤s(x_i)_{1 \leq i \leq s} and (yi)1≤i≤s(y_i)_{1 \leq i \leq s} are both free.

By (33) (resp. (34)) each element of N=u1(E∗)N = u_1(E^*) (resp. M=u2(F∗)M = u_2(F^*)) is a linear combination of the yiy_i (resp. the xix_i); whence the first assertion. If s=rs = r, the subspace generated by the xix_i (resp. yiy_i) with dimension ≤dim⁡M\leq \dim M (resp. ≤dim⁡N\leq \dim N) and containing MM (resp. NN) is identical with it and hence (a) implies (b) and (c) and a fortiori (d). Conversely, each of conditions (b) and (c) implies (a) by definition of rg(u)\mathrm{rg}(u). Finally if (d) holds, there exists a family (xi∗)1≤i≤s(x_i^*)_{1 \leq i \leq s} of elements of E∗E^* such that ⟨xi,xj∗⟩=δij\langle x_i, x_j^* \rangle = \delta_{ij} (no. 5, Corollary 1 to Theorem 7) and hence it follows from (33) that (yi)(y_i) is a basis of NN, which completes the proof.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
